US Masters 2014: Thursday Highlights
Posted at April 11, 2014
Round One at the US Masters saw some spectacular golf along with some less than spectacular outfits. We run through some of our favourite looks from Day One and also pick out some of the worst from Thursday at Augusta.
Jonas Blixt, Puma Golf
Jonas showed his patriotic side with a Swedish inspired Puma golf outfit. Jonas led the US Masters very early on, reaching 4 under before falling back to (-2) for the day. The official colour name for his Puma golf outfit from Masters Thursday is 'Blue Aster'; or should that be Blue Master?
Watch Jonas Blixt birdie the sixth hole.
Rickie Fowler, Puma Golf
Rickie Fowler's US Masters scripts have possibly been the most talked about on Twitter in the past week, and it was good to see Rickie play well on Thursday. Sporting the Lime Green colour way from Puma, Rickie certainly looked the part on his way to an opening round of 71, one below par.
Watch Rickie chip in for birdie at the fourth hole.
Bubba Watson, Oakley Golf
Former Masters champion Bubba Watson loves Augusta National, evident with his opening Thursday score of 69 (-3). Finishing just one off the lead, Bubba looked great wearing the new SS14 Oakley Golf range with the bright Sulphur (or is that Sulfur?) colour with black Oakley Take pants.
Rory McIlroy, Nike Golf
Rory McIlroy is one of the favourites to don the Green Jacket come Masters Sunday and he started off solidly by posting a score of 71, including a bogey at the final hole. Rory wears the Nike lightweight innovation polo shirt and will wear the same style every day in a different colour, which you can find right here >>
Martin Kaymer, Hugo Boss
Poor Martin Kaymer had a tough day on Masters Thursday. 6 bogeys around Augusta means that he will need to play solidly in round 2 if he wants to make the cut for the weekend, currently (+3). At least he looked good in the Hugo Boss Zelchior Pro sweater, right?
Thorbjorn Olesen, Nike Golf
Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark is a cool customer, with perhaps our favourite outfit from the day. We love his red Nike Golf Edge pants matched with the black polo shirt, which features subtle matching button detail in red. An OK round one for Olesen, currently sitting (+2).
Jason Day, Adidas Golf
Jason Day is another who fell away disappointingly on Masters Thursday. Hotly tipped for success by many, the Australian wore the Bahia Coral Adidas golf shirt and lead coloured Adidas Flat Front trousers but a bogey, bogey, double-bogey run at the 8th, 9th and 10th which de-railed his Green Jacket bid in emphatic fashion.
Miguel Angel Jiminez, Nebuloni Golf
And finally, the older gentleman can still look the part on the golf course, too! Miguel Angel Jiminez looked great sporting a pink and black number, matched perfectly with his Nebuloni golf shoes. The charismatic Spaniard posted an equally impressive round of 71, too, despite leading at 4 under for a stint!
Sorry, Big Phil. That black shirt and those pinstripe trousers in tobacco brown just don't match. Remember, your golf fashion always reflects on your game; Mickelson's first round included a double and triple-bogey on his way to his worst opening score at Augusta, ever.
Granted, Bill Haas does lead the way after Round One of the US Masters, 2014. However, his outfit did not reflect his performance. We're not even sure what colour you could call those trousers, Pastel Tangerine? Sunny Delight? Half-Hearted Rickie Fowler Orange? Who knows.
We hate to have to do this. We love Graham, we love his style and (most of) his Puma Golf outfits, but this Thursday outfit just didn't work. That baby blue, striped shirt and white trouser combination was not a good look and this reflected upon his golf, too, with an opening round of 80 and zero birdies. It's lucky he has that beard to make up for it.
Ian Poulter described it as a Dunlop Tennis Ball on twitter. We have nothing more to say.
Day Two of the US Masters 2014 kicks off later today, Friday the 11th of April. Stay tuned for more of our style highlights from Augusta National!
