Rickie Fowler: Behind The Colour
Rickie Fowler – Behind the Colour
In light of Rickie Fowler’s emphatic 6-stroke victory at the Kolon Korea Open yesterday, Golfposer thought it would be fitting to feature Puma Golf’s young starlet here in our weekly news! Making the golfing world sit up and take notice with his exciting and colourful Puma Golf outfits, Rickie is going from strength to strength with five top 10 finishes on the tour this year – including that incredible T2 finish at the Bridgestone Invitational!
Born in Anaheim, California, Rickie Yutaka Fowler picked up his first golf club at the tender age of three – however it is widely known that golf was not always Rickie’s preferred sport. Growing up in the town of Murrieta, he had a very keen interest in Motocross Racing and this far more extreme sport took priority over golf until the age of 15. Rickie raced with the number 15 on his helmet until an accident which broke his foot in three places. This also incurred damage to his knee and prompted Rickie’s riding career to take a ‘back seat’ in his life. Despite the transition though, there was no loss in determination from Rickie and he transferred skills from other hobbies such as the patience required for fishing into his game.
After playing in two Walker Cups, and claiming a record of 3-1 and 4-0 in the tournaments, Rickie turned pro in September 2009. Some believed this to be a bad decision by the young golfing sensation - as they thought he could have picked up some serious money from sponsorships in the summer of that year. Rickie opted to delay turning pro though, and we think this may have been a very good move as in the same month he signed up with Puma Golf and Titleist. It is clear why Rickie attracted such interest from these giants of the golfing world, having won several awards such as the Ben Hogan and Phil Mickelson awards and becoming the first freshman to do so! The collections released with Puma have sent shockwaves through the golf clothing industry – with vibrant colour ranges and some edgy designs that are guaranteed to stand out on the golf course! Rickie matches his outfits with the top-of-the-range Puma Cell Fusion golf shoes using Smart Quill® technology, and often favours fitted ‘mono-line’ Puma Golf Caps to a standard golf cap.
After the death of Barry McDonnell, his golfing coach of 15 years, the PGA tour ‘rookie of 2010’ is now coached by Chris Noss and is destined for big things in his career. Currently sitting at World number 24, Rickie Fowler is a name everyone in the golfing world is beginning to remember – though not just for his performances. His often ‘loud’ outfits are a breath of fresh air at every tournament that he plays in, and his final day rounds always feature a ‘Vibrant Orange’ outfit in honour of Oklahoma State University – where he studied for two years. His win in Korea yesterday is his first as a professional - finishing with a six-shot lead over Oakley player and World Number 3 Rory McIlroy. Rickie also equalled the course record on Saturday – carding an incredible round of 63!
Having previously been a ‘Las Vegas Golfer’, we at Golfposer predict Rickie Fowler will hit the jackpot of a major very soon!
Even if the loud, bright colours are not quite your thing, Golfposer also have some more reserved pieces from Puma Golf which are equally as stylish!
