WGC Bridgestone Invitational - Garcia Leads
Posted at August 2, 2014
The third round of the WGC Bridgestone Invitational is under way with Sergio Garcia leading the way after a quite stunning second round 61!
Firestone CC is one of the best courses on the PGA Tour calendar and yesterday the WGC Bridgestone Invitational saw some of the best golf of the season, too. Sergio Garcia, fresh off the back of his T2 finish at the Open Championship, posted a solitary birdie in his front nine only to follow up with a stunning back-nine 27 - including no short of eight birdies. A remarkable run of form and it's these special types of moments which win championships. There's much golf yet to play, though, with a seriously strong field chasing the Spaniard's tail.
Justin Rose sits second, three shots behind, whilst Open Champion Rory McIlroy is one of three players a further stroke behind. Garcia's Hoylake compatriot Rickie Fowler is back in the mix at Firestone, too, having posted two solid rounds of 67 thus far. Rickie, wearing the brand new AW14 Puma Golf range, told of his joy at effectively securing an automatic Ryder Cup spot two weeks ago and, once the PGA Championship is out of the way next week, that's certainly where everyone else's eyes will be focusing, too.
Garcia, Rose, McIlroy reads well at the top of the leaderboard in terms of European hope for Gleneagles; however the next best Europeans after that are Francesco Molinari and Thomas Bjorn, each sitting a lowly (-3) after round two. Promising, but the Ryder Cup is such a huge team effort and so perhaps we shouldn't get too confident just because we have the Open Champion in our ranks and playing well! September can't come quick enough.
