Nordea Masters 2014 Preview
Posted at May 27, 2014
The Nordea Masters begins this week in Sweden with Henrik Stenson and Jonas Blixt amongst the early favourites!
After all the excitement of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth last week, the European Tour rolls into Sweden as the Nordea Masters graces our screens for its 24th running. Taking place at PGA Sweden National's Lakes Course for the first time, the event has attracted some of the most in-form golfers of the season including home-grown talents Henrik Stenson and Jonas Blixt. The two Swedes have each had muted success on the professional tours this year and are yet to record a victory; both will also be looking to kickstart their seasons just in time for the second major at Pinehurst in a few weeks.
Sweden are well known for producing some of the most iconic brands in golf and the calibre of golfers which they nurture is quite impressive, too. It is surely only a matter of time before the country has its very first major winner and it is more than likely that one of either Blixt or Stenson will provide the goods; Puma's Jonas Blixt has enjoyed a T2 and 4th place finish in his last two majors, whilst the world number two Hugo Boss ambassador cleaned up on both the European and PGA tours last season.
The Nordea Masters trophy will be defended by Mikko Ilonen this week, who is also a new Hugo Boss brand ambassador, and the Finn will also be looking to win the title for the third time - a feat only achieved by Lee Westwood and Colin Montgomerie to date. Elsewhere, Miguel Ángel Jiménez will be looking to secure a second win in three weeks, whilst Thomas Björn will also be hoping to get over the hurt of throwing away that five shot lead on Sunday past. Other notable competitors include former champions Peter Hanson and Marc Warren, whilst Shane Lowry, Francesco Molinari, Rafa Cabrera-Bello and Stephen Gallacher will all be looking to kick on from their excellent BMW PGA finishes.
It's a seriously strong line-up for the Nordea Masters this week and it is almost inevitable that at least a couple of these names will be atop the leaderboard come Sunday afternoon. However, most of the attention will focus on the battle of the Swedes themselves in the build up and we can't wait to see the event unfold as the US Open draws ever closer.
