Martin Kaymer TPC Sawgrass 2014 Hugo Boss

Martin Kaymer sealed The Players Championship in dramatic fashion late on Sunday; here is the story of his superb tournament at Sawgrass!

Martin Kaymer sealed The Players Championship 2014 in dramatic fashion late on Sunday, bringing his first PGA Tour victory since his major triumph way back in 2010. A stellar first round tied the course record on the Stadium Course at Sawgrass, a bogey-free (nine under par) 63 earned the big German a two shot lead from Russell Henley and the European Ryder Cup hero essentially led the field from then on! On day one at TPC Sawgrass, Martin Kaymer wore the Hugo Boss Paddy MK shirt in white - the first of three colours which he wore at the PGA Tour's flagship event.

Kaymer capitalised on his teriffic start at TPC Sawgrass by posting a three under par round of 69, wearing the Paddy MK shirt from the Hugo Boss Spring collection. The lead from Day One was cut to just one stroke over the youngster Jordan Spieth, who was yet to card a bogey over his first two rounds - an impressive feat around the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. At the first major tournament of the year, Spieth was well in contention for victory but blew up during his final round and eventually lost out to Bubba Watson; posing the question of whether the same would happen for Jordan at this 'fifth major' tournament?

In the tournament prior to TPC Sawgrass, Martin had also started off in impressive fashion before falling away on the Saturday at Wells Fargo. With the determination not to let the same happen two weeks running, Martin Kaymer posted an unspectacular but solid 72 to remain at (-12) for the tournament but was pegged back by the remarkably consistent Jordan Spieth who extended his bogey-free run to 54 holes around Sawgrass. On Saturday, Martin Kaymer wore the blue version of the Paddy MK golf shirt which we loved along with the white Hugo Boss golf trousers!

With Spieth failing to mount any real significant title bid in a final round synonymous with his Masters effort at Augusta, Martin Kaymer at times held a five-shot lead over the rest of the field. The championship trophy was his to lose, but everyone who follows golf knows that TPC Sawgrass is far from over when the treacherous 17th and 18th are still left to play. We highlighted 'drama at the 17th' as one of our five things to watch this week, and we certainly got it right with Martin holing a superb, 28-foot swinging putt to scramble par and consequently save the tournament! Eventually winning by the single stroke over Jim Furyk, Kaymer wore the Pink Paddy MK golf shirt from Hugo Boss to mark Mothers' Day in the US - a shirt which has rapidly increased in popularity following his victory!

We love Hugo Boss golf clothing. Now launching four collections per year, the Hugo Boss green label range features some incredibly strong colour ways and shirt styles, as worn on the PGA Tour by Henrik Stenson, Erik Compton, Richard H Lee and Luke Guthrie. The MK collection is inevitably what Martin Kaymer opts to wear most often, but as we saw around Quail Hollow and at the Practice Round of TPC Sawgrass (below), Kaymer does enjoy wearing the regular Green Label golf collection too!
