Hugo Boss Ben Crane Leads St Jude Classic
Posted at June 7, 2014
Ben Crane has not had the greatest time in golf over the past couple of seasons, but he is back on hot form at the St Jude Classic!
Ben Crane is, without doubt, one of the biggest characters on the PGA Tour. His great sense of humour and light-hearted take on life are two of his greatest assets and whilst all of his viral Youtube videos are great to watch and have boosted Crane's popularity incredibly, at the end of the day they have simply masked a lot of poor form during the past three years. His last PGA Tour win was in 2011 at the McGladrey Classic and even this season, Crane has only mustered one top 25 finish in sixteen starts. There is a reason for his ill-form, though - Ben has been putting a lot of work into altering his swing in a bid to avoid any further damage to his body and, more specifically, his problematic back.
Finally though, things are looking up for the Hugo Boss star. With many players still to complete their second round at the St Jude Classic (played at TPC Southwind, Memphis), Ben currently holds a 7 stroke clubhouse lead and is still six shots ahead of his nearest competitor, having made the most of the calm before the (numerous) Tennessee storms. His game would appear to be coming together nicely and, with a helping hand from the scheduling, Crane looks in a great position to finish strongly and perhaps seal his first win on the tour in nearly three years.
To do so, Ben Crane will hope to keep that putter as red hot as it has been over the first two rounds. Over 35 holes, Crane had a 100% success rate from within 15 feet (before a slip-up at the 18th for birdie yesterday); a surprise for many as he was only ranked 90th in terms of strokes gained putting this season. The 37 year old is well experienced and well followed; it would certainly be nice to see this golfing comedian take centre stage for Hugo Boss - so long as he continues filming his quality videos in his spare time!
