Gullane No 1 - VIP Puma Golf Experience Day

In association with Puma Golf, we took two competition winners to walk in Rickie Fowler's footsteps on the links of Gullane No 1 - the location of his famous Scottish Open victory in 2015. Here is the story of the day...

Gullane No 1 - The Competition

Our VIP Competition days are becoming a frequent fixture on the calendar and our latest was launched back in March, in association with Puma Golf & Gullane Golf Club. All customers who purchased any pair of Puma IGNITE golf shoes (TitanTour, Ignite Spikeless or High Tops) were automatically entered into the exclusive prize draw and the two lucky winners were Ryan McFarlane (Fife) and Jordan Kendall (London), flanked above by Johnny Wallace (Puma Golf) and Andy Coulter (Golfposer).

The VIP Experience day at Gullane No 1 took place on Friday the 22nd of April and featured a pre/post match meal within the newly refurbished members' clubhouse - a very kind gesture from the wonderful team at Gullane. The clubhouse itself offers a very traditional and grand look from the outside but the interior offers a wonderful contrast with a modern feel and immaculate presentation. Our group were made to feel very welcome by all of the staff whilst the meal after a long eighteen holes was also thoroughly enjoyable.

Gullane No 1 - Rickie Fowler

Of course, the Gullane clubhouse was refurbished just in time for the Scottish Open in 2015 - the most significant event to be held at Gullane No 1 in recent years. Many other competitions with prestige have also taken place on the links of Gullane No 1, including both ladies & gents amateur open championships and the final qualifying round for the Open Championship itself, but it will most definitely be most remembered for that dramatic final day of the Scottish Open.

It was a highly competitive Scottish Open championship with no individual pulling away from the pack, until Rickie Fowler turned on the style down the final stretch with three birdies in his last four holes to steal the title away from compatriot Matt Kuchar and Raphael Jacquelin of France. A wedge to within 2 feet at the 18th was most definitely a championship worthy shot and we were really looking forward to replicating the same scenes with our own Gullane experience day!

Gullane No 1 - The Match

And replicate it we did (well, one of us). The match itself was split into two mini 9-hole competitions with a mixing of the pairs each way, but both proved to be very tightly contested affairs. Mixed fortunes for both pairings on the testing greens and in the treacherous bunkers meant that neither team dominated - but it was Johnny Wallace of Puma Golf who was inspired by Rickie Fowler and finished the day with back to back birdies. A tidy approach at 18 to within ten feet of the pin was the perfect way to truly walk in Rickie's footsteps - and Johnny certainly felt like a champion, just look at that grin!

Gullane No 1 - Puma Golf Shoes

The entire competition was focused on the Puma Golf shoes and all four players were full of praise for their chosen styles. Three opted for the TitanTour Ignite Golf shoes in different colours - proving that Puma can be worn with both vibrant and colourful outfits or equally as part of a classic looking combination. Both Ryan and our roving photographer chose the Puma Ignite spikeless for the links of Gullane No 1, whilst we couldn't resist taking our Puma TRICKS golf shoes for a view over the picturesque 7th hole.

Gullane No 1 - The Golf Course

As for the course itself, the layout is testing for any calibre of golfer but seriously enjoyable at the same time. The first two and final two holes offer scenes overlooking the town of Gullane and other adjacent towns & golf courses, whilst the rest of the course overlooks the eastern stretch of the Forth river with some spectacular views which could rival any links course in the world. The greens were expectedly difficult to master and the bunkers were just as punishing - but it all makes for a wonderful links experience and we hope our Facebook photo album below highlights just how enjoyable the day was.

What they said:

Jordan: "As a big fan of Rickie Fowler, I couldn't have asked for a better course to play than Gullane No 1. The scenery, quality of greens and friendly welcome were a testament to the staff of the golf club - it made my journey to Scotland all the more worthwhile. Massive thanks to the boys at Puma and Golfposer for putting on the day!"

Ryan: "I purchased a pair of the Puma Ignite Spikeless golf shoes and couldn't believe the comfort straight out of the box. The fit is amazing and the grip you feel is superb for a spikeless sole. I had a fantastic day playing Gullane No 1 with Golfposer & Puma and will look forward to see what else they have in store for the future. Thanks to them both for everything and I would also like to add how kind and welcoming Gullane Golf Club were - their facilities are also outstanding.

Andy: "All in all, we owe a huge thanks to the team at Gullane Golf Club for their accommodation, to Johnny Wallace at Puma Golf & to our two customers for taking the time to join us to walk in Rickie's Footsteps. If you missed out this time, stay tuned for many more opportunities with Golfposer & Puma Golf coming very soon."
