BMW Championship Round Two - Fed Ex Cup
Posted at September 6, 2014
Friday saw much lower scoring and some of the big names jump to the top of the leaderboard at the BMW Championship in Denver!
Sergio Garcia might have been critical of the difficult course conditions at Cherry Hills CC on Thursday but he certainly couldn't complain after Friday's showing. A hole out from the bunker, an eagle chip-in and just 21 putts helped to craft his six-under par round of 64 - matched only by Ryan Palmer who is one shot back in second place. Speaking after, Sergio said it was difficult to take the week off from the Deutsche Bank championship last week but felt it necessary in order to prepare not only for the remainder of the FedEx Cup, but for the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles later this month, too. It's nice to see a player less focused on personal wealth and more on form and performance; although Sergio is now predicted to move to 2nd in the FedEx Rankings if he holds onto the lead this weekend!
One player who needs no such rest is the world number one, Rory McIlroy. An average round came to life over the last three holes on Friday for the Nike star, with two of his three birdies resulting from 27 and 34 ft monster putts finding their way into the hole. Momentum can be a strange thing and it would certainly seem McIlroy is on a high after that finish; "It's amazing what a different finish to a round can do". Remember, McIlroy finished +2 over his last six holes on Thursday at Cherry Hills and started slow yesterday...a fast finish and an equally fast start could be predicted for Saturday!
Elsewhere, Billy Horschel, Graham DeLaet and Rickie Fowler each continued their fine form - the latter posting the only bogey-free round so far to haul himself back into the championship. Henrik Stenson is perhaps the most notable of those who need a high finish to qualify for the Coca Cola Tour Championship next week; top four would ensure a shot at defending his title. It will certainly make for an interesting watch with plenty of golf yet to play on the tough Cherry Hills CC course!
