The first signs of wintry weather appeared last week so we thought to focus on technical base layers - ideal for protecting against the bitter cold out on the course this season!

You may be forgiven for being envious of the modern day professional golfer as autumn/winter golfing for the elite means travelling the world and competing in continuous 20°+ heat in beautiful locations such as Florida and Dubai - whereas the rest of us brave single figure temperatures, bitter winds and piercing cold rain just to play the game we love. Whilst we can't offer to jet everyone off to the southern US states this winter, we can provide some top quality base layer protection for on the course at home from brands such as Galvin Green, Under Armour and Adidas Golf!

Compression base layer shirts are more than just another layer of clothing intended to keep you warm, they are specifically engineered with innovative technology to enhance performance and comfort on the golf course. Top Swedish brand Galvin Green have hit the nail on the head with their base layer shirts and leggings this season, with skintight compression and a clever body mapping system used to its full potential. The 10° compression range has been especially developed to provide extraordinary performance in cold weather conditions and uses high-tech hollow fibres to produce a warming effect. Blood and oxygen flow is in turn enhanced to improve circulation to the muscles and improve stamina also.

Only the Edge shirt and Elmo leggings use the innovative body mapping system - an ergonomic template created especially for golfers by the clever brains at Galvin Green HQ. This body mapping technology targets critical areas of the human anatomy to increase and decrease compression levels accordingly. In areas requiring extra compression and warmth such as the upper back muscle group (key for your golf swing), built-in multi layer technology enhances this compression and warming effect to maintain these key muscles at an optimum performance temperature. For moving comfort, flex points with the reduced compression areas are placed in where extra flexibility and comfort is required. Finally, fabric with enhanced breathability provides extra ventilation to warmer areas of the body, such as the underarms, and lifts comfort to a new level. 

The centrepiece of the entire Under Armour brand is, of course, the mock neck base layer and as such this excellent compression layer is widely considered the original and best. With a signature Under Armour compression fit for top performance, these base layers act almost as a second skin and feature a double layer brushback knit fabrication to effectively create a microclimate next to your skin. Ideal for use in temperatures below 13°, the compression nature of this shirt (similar to the Galvin Green options) will lead to increased blood flow to the muscles in order to increase stamina and recovery whilst reducing muscle fatigue and soreness. 

With Under Armour ColdGear technology to wick moisture away from your skin without adding any real weight, these base layers are fantastic value and also have odour controlling properties to maintain freshness. The shirt itself has also been designed with sports performers in mind as a silicone grip at the waist prevents the shirt from riding upwards and flatlock seam detail allows for even more comfort. Available in a range of colours to match any outfit, Under Armour base layers look great and are instantly recognisable with the mock neck collar detail.

The third option of golf base layers comes from golf experts Adidas, with four colour ways of the Climalite mock neck shirt available to match with each of your favourite Adidas Golf outifts. The Climalite compression technology once again acts as a trap for warm air and circulates around your key muscle groups, whilst the Climalite technology wicks away moisture to keep you dry and comfortable. Odour control and a resistance to pilling is also featured in this heavier fabric, making each shirt an absolute bargain for Autumn/Winter 2012. 

Not everyone can live the dream during this Autumn/Winter season and play golf abroad in a t-shirt and shorts, but everyone can make golfing at home a little bit easier with warm base layers beneath any outfit! As much as we may not wish to believe it, Summer has now been and passed (if she ever arrived) and it's time to start thinking about Autumn/Winter golfing! Many of you may well go into hibernation and refuse to pick up a club during the bitter Scottish winter, but if you kit yourself out correctly and protect yourself from the elements - winter golf can be thoroughly enjoyable! Everyone knows about Galvin Green and their reputation for golf waterproofs, but they are one of the best providers of warm golf apparel as well! 

For many years at Golfposer we have championed the excellence of Gore-Tex fabrics which Galvin Green use to create their fantastic waterproof golf wear with lifetime guarantee - but equally as great is the Insula™ warm layer fabric incorporated into much of their winter clothing and accessory range. Insula products have terrific insulation properties using built-in air chambers and also offer maximum breathability through allowing excess moisture to escape the body. Insula garments are soft to the touch and have added stretch for a fantastic level of comfort and freedom of movement during the golf swing - unsurprising considering the team at Galvin Green design every product especially for golfers! 

Insula garments are excellent to wear beneath an outer shell waterproof jacket or windstopper - embracing the Multi Layer Concept from Galvin Green - but any piece from the AW12 range looks just as great on its own! We love the Duran full zip insula jacket which is available in a stunning Brilliant Blue with contrasting tones of black and white throughout, whilst the White version also includes the brand new 2012 colour of green from the Swedish golf experts. A few styles of half zip Insula pullovers are also available, notably the trendy Donovan which has contrast colour detailing on the reverse bottom and sides. Another excellent piece of technology Galvin Green incorporate into their winter golfing range is the 10° Skintight Compression base layers, in which some pieces use a clever body mapping system along with hollow fibres, just like within Insula fabrics, for thermal insulation. Built-in multi layer technology provides extra compression to increase the warming effect on the upper back muscle groups which are key to everybody's swing whilst there are specific areas with reduced compression for flexibility and ease of movement. Extremely high breathability is once again on offer with 10° Skintight garments and this allows for extra ventilation in warmer areas of the body to keep you comfortable also. The body mapping system is utilised in the Edge and Elmo base layers, whilst the classic Elton top and Evo leggings use regular 10° Compression warmth technology. 

Also included within the winter range from Galvin Green is a fantastic selection of accessories which are sure to keep you warm and comfortable on the course later this season. Using the previously mentioned Insula fabric, the Doyle hat is soft and stretchy and is available in a range of colours so you can match one up with every Galvin Green outfit to look good as well as keeping warm! The Brady beanie and Breeze bobble hat each have a windstopper lining to provide protection against windchill but still allow for breathability as well. Windstopper fabrics are soft and lightweight but perform excellently to thermoregulate your body temperature - keeping you in an optimum performance state every round! Windstopper gloves are also available which have an all weather synthetic grip whilst the Walter mitts are ideal for slipping on in between shots.
